Dr. Mayowa Daniel Pemi, FWACP
Dr. Mayowa Daniel Pemi, FWACP is a highly experienced Family Physician, Specialist Consultant, Healthcare Manager, Medical Educator and Clinical Leader with over 23 years of medical practice experience, including more than 15 years as a Specialist Consultant Family Physician. He is committed to delivering comprehensive, patient-centred healthcare and advancing equitable access to quality healthcare, particularly within underserved and rural communities. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Ilorin, a Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in Family Medicine, and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He has also undertaken specialised professional training in diabetes care, clinical management of HIV, implementation science, global health research, monitoring and evaluation, leadership and health management, and wellbeing for health professionals. Dr. Pemi has held several significant clinical and administrative leadership positions, including Head of Department of Family Medicine at Federal Medical Centre, Bida, Consultant Special Grade and Head of Hospital Services at the Family Medicine Practice Centre, Gawu-Babangida, and membership of senior management and strategic planning committees. His leadership experience encompasses healthcare service delivery, hospital administration, strategic development, clinical training and quality improvement. A strong advocate for medical education and professional development, Dr. Pemi has supervised and mentored numerous resident doctors and nurses and has played an important role in postgraduate medical training. He has contributed to residency accreditation, developed structured clinical training programmes and achieved significant improvements in postgraduate examination performance. He is also an Examiner of the West African College of Physicians, a role he has held since 2017. His healthcare leadership extends beyond clinical practice. He has contributed to strategic health policy development, COVID-19 response, infrastructure development, clinical guideline development and Continuing Medical Education. Among his notable achievements was advocating for philanthropic support for a 30-bed ward at the Federal Medical Centre outpost in Gawu-Babangida and contributing to the development of improved emergency and rural healthcare infrastructure. Dr. Pemi is also deeply committed to community health and healthcare access. His experience includes establishing a healthcare facility during his National Youth Service in an underserved community in Adamawa State and leading voluntary medical outreaches to rural communities. He is actively involved in professional leadership through the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON), where he currently serves as National Coordinator for Continuous Medical Education, and has previously served as Chairman of its Niger State Chapter. He has also held leadership positions within the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Medical Association. As a researcher, Dr. Pemi has contributed to publications covering diabetes and diabetic foot-risk screening, maternal anaemia, predictors of anaemia in pregnancy, and malaria diagnostic testing, demonstrating his interest in evidence-based clinical practice and public health research.
